Linguistic examination of verbal signs considers their sound, spelling, meaning and associations. For a brand, name or domain name, it is important to show which linguistic features create similarity and which differences are significant.
Subject of examination
- Verbal signs in their exact spelling
- Pronunciation, stress, transliteration and language
- Semantic relationships, word formation and context of use
Sample questions for the expert
- What phonetic, graphic and semantic similarities exist between the signs?
- What is the meaning of each sign, and what linguistic associations may it evoke?
- How do stress, transliteration and word formation affect perception?
- Which elements are in common use or descriptive from a linguistic perspective?
The final questions are formulated according to the objects and circumstances of the particular task.
What to prepare
- Images and exact spelling of the signs being compared
- Language, pronunciation variants and actual examples of use
- A list of objects being compared and specific questions
- Dispute documents and the previous report, if a review is required
How the examination is conducted
The sounds, letters and meanings are compared both element by element and as a whole. Findings are linked to linguistic features and usage data. Assumed perception is not presented as the results of a consumer survey.
Scope and limitations
The linguist does not decide whether to register a trademark or establish an infringement of rights. The legal assessment of confusing similarity cannot be replaced by a finding about just one linguistic feature.
What the deliverable records
The deliverable describes the similarities and differences established, their linguistic nature and the limits of the findings concerning the signs supplied.
Cost and terms
from RUB 50,000. The exact cost depends on the volume of material, number of questions, urgency and need for a combined examination.
